Bergamot & Rosemary Toilet-fresh Tablets

Makes: about 6 tablets
Shelf life: up to 4 weeks
500g/17oz bicarbonate of soda
125g/4½oz citric acid
20 drops grapefruit essential oil
20 drops bergamot essential oil
20 drops rosemary essential oil
2 tablespoons witch hazel
1 small spray bottle
1 silicone 6-hole muffin tray
1 lidded glass jar
Put the the bicarbonate of soda and the citric acid in a bowl and mix, then add the
essential oils, and mix again.
Pour the witch hazel into a small spray bottle, and lightly mist the mixture of dry
ingredients with one or two sprays of witch hazel at a time. The trick is to moisten the
mixture enough to be able to mould it, but not so that it is so wet it reacts in the bowl.
Every time you spray, mix well and test to see if the mixture will form a clump in your
hand. It shouldn’t take many sprays, about 6 or 7, to get the mixture to the right
consistency – so don’t get carried away.
Once the mixture clumps together, use a spoon to pack it into your silicone mould. I
use a silicone muffin tray with 6 holes in it, to make 6 large tablets. Make sure you
press firmly down with the back of your spoon, so that the mixture is tightly packed.
Leave the tablets to dry overnight, then the next day pop them out and store them in an
airtight jar.
To use
Drop 1 tablet into your toilet bowl. Leave it to sit for at least 30 minutes, or ideally
overnight (for the best results), then scrub with a toilet brush and flush to rinse. For
stubbornly stained toilets, use two tablets; and for really stubbornly stained toilets,
repeat every day for a week.
* Don’t use these tablets in your cistern, only in the toilet bowl, and wait until the tablets
have stopped fizzing before you flush for maximum cleaning efficiency.
