Natural Cleaning No-nos
There are several ingredients you should never mix. This might be because the
combinations are hazardous to health, or because you’ll end up with a completely
ineffective cleaning product. The chances are if you’ve tried natural cleaning before and
been disappointed with the results, it’s because you mixed two of the following
ingredients together:
Hydrogen peroxide & vinegar
A WARNING!
Mixing hydrogen peroxide with vinegar releases a noxious gas called peracetic acid,
which, if breathed in, can permanently damage your lungs, cause asthma, and irritate
the skin and eyes.
Liquid castile soap & vinegar
Although harmless, mixing liquid castile soap and vinegar is essentially a waste of
money and soap. Vinegar is an acid and the liquid castile soap is a base. When you
combine an acid and a base, the two ingredients react to cancel each other out.
When I want to mix soap with vinegar, I prefer to use an eco-friendlier washing-up
liquid, which I think performs better.
Bicarbonate of soda & vinegar
You may have heard that bicarbonate of soda and vinegar make a great foaming
cleaner. I’m afraid to tell you that this isn’t the case. Bicarbonate of soda is a base and,
as you already know, vinegar is an acid. They cancel each other out, leaving you with
nothing more than a salty water solution. Save this combination for unblocking drains:
the foaming action can help dislodge debris, but nothing more.
Borax substitute or soda crystals & vinegar
Both borax substitute and soda crystals are bases, so if you were to mix either of them
with vinegar, the two would cancel each other out.
