Using the bin
All food that goes into the bin should be as dry as possible, and wrapped in newspaper if it’s likely to smell. Empty the bin frequently and wash and disinfect it every week. Remove the liner, partially fill with hot soapy water and wipe the inside with a disposable cloth. Allow the liner to dry before fitting a fresh bag, finally wiping inside the lid and around the rim.
The bin should be emptied to an outside bin regularly to prevent smells and deter pests. Plastic liner sacks should be tied closed and put into a sturdy plastic or metal bin with a lid to stop foraging animals and pests gaining access to the contents. Weight the handle down with a brick, clip or tie it shut if wind or animals are a problem. Clean the outside bin with hot water and disinfectant from time to time. Wrap broken glass in paper or place in an open sturdy box so that collectors can see any potential danger.
