Beeswax polish
This is the kindest wax for wood. You can buy it in tablet form that you have to soften. Add linseed oil to keep it soft and a couple of drops of essential oil to fragrance. Alternatively it’s available ready formulated. Don’t be tempted to wax wood too frequently, it’s not necessary.
Bicarbonate of soda
This has been used for scores of jobs over hundreds of years. It provides an excellent alterniative to harsh chemical abrasive cleaners for people with allergies or sensitive skin. It makes a powerful paste when mixed with bleach and is a very effective natural deodorizer.
Biological washing powder
Once it looked as if liquids, creams and gels would replace traditional powder, but powder is more economical. Powder allows you to measure exactly how much you need instead of using the manufacturer’s tablet or capsule dose. Biological powder contains enzymes, which help shift grease and stains. Machine washing can leave trace amounts of detergent in clothes, which some people find causes a skin itchiness or allergy. If you are affected, run an extra rinse cycle or switch to non-biological detergent.
Bleach
Chlorine bleach is the most common household bleach. Ammonia bleach is also available, but the two must never be mixed. Newer oxy bleaches work equally well without the pungent chlorine smell.
